Enewetak Atoll is a large collection of coral atoll of about 40 islands in the Pacific Ocean. This location was the primarily testing range for nuclear weapons during the cold war. Additionally, more than 30 megatons of TNT took place here. As a result, from 1977-1980 a concrete dome called the Runit Dome was built. 43 nuclear tests were fired at enewetak from 1948 to 1958. Furthermore, some of these tests were famous operations, such as Operation Ivy.
The Runit Dome is part of a $250 million cleanup process in an effort to enclose the contaminated radioactive soil. Taking more than three years to build and containing 358 concrete panels, the construction was completed in 1980.
